ABOUT THINK PUBLIC SCHOOLS

THINK Public Schools is a fictional charter school system set in a near future where business interests, the gun lobby, and conservative policies have an even firmer grip on American education. Tiffany K. Smith invites visitors to explore THINK through a teacher recruitment website that promotes eyebrow-raising benefits like body cameras, PTSD-blocking drugs, and payment in the school’s own currency. Using dark humor in video performances, digital collages, and web design Smith has created a sharp and cathartic critique of the forces shaping education from the perspective of a classroom veteran. While THINK is not a real school, it might not be far off with the way that conservative policies are shaping education throughout America.
The first iteration of this project can be seen in Smith's virtual teachers' lounge. This project was made possible thanks to the support of the Museum of Human Achievement and the Welcome to My Homepage virtual residency.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Tiffany K. Smith is an interdisciplinary artist from Los Angeles, CA living and working in Austin, TX. Drawing on her past experience as a teacher, she makes digital collages, installations, and web-based art that examine the erosion of institutions, late-stage capitalism, and the culture of violence in America. Her projects often pull from advertising, active shooter training, and political speeches to highlight the commodification of tragedies caused by America’s gun violence epidemic and encourage a deeper investigation of policies shaping education.
